Account Lockout - Unlock a Locked Out User Account

You can type in the command below in a elevated command prompt (Run as administrator), and press enter to unlock a specific username.

net user /active:yes username


You could also Set an Account Lockout Duration for Locked Out User Accounts to have them unlock automatically after XX amount of minutes.

It depends on what the account lockout duration was set to. By default, you must wait 30 minutes before the account is automatically unlocked.

In the first part, "it's" should be "its" in "was locked out when it reached it's account lockout threshold of invalid logon attempts".

Does anyone know if once the account is locked if continually entering the wrong password will extend the locked out duration from the point of last failed (wrong password) entry?

Say the lockout is for 30 minutes, and 15 minutes into the locked out period you try entering the password incorrectly does it extend the locked out period from that point or is the original lockout 30 minutes still in effect and further attempts are just ignored?

If the locked out period is extended, does that happen only if the invalid attempts are re-exceed or does each invalid attempt extend it?

My concern is if one doesn't know exatly when they got locked (they didn't look at the time) and they think it's been (say) 30 minutes, but it's only been 27 and they try again.

If you enter the wrong password again, the set account lockout threshold will just start over. It doesn't accumulate. :)
