How to Disable the Sleep Option in the Windows Shut Down Menu

Here is a fairly simple method to disable the sleep option in the Windows shut down menu; it's very easy to re-enable the option in future if the need ever arises.

Note   Note
This tutorial will work for Windows 7 and Vista.

As a precaution you may want to create a System Restore point before getting started, the tutorial can be viewed at the link below.

Making changes to the Windows Registry has the potential to disable the PC, if you have any concerns over using the information set forth here please feel free to post a question in this same tutorial and we will be glad to help.
Let's get started!

Option One

Disable Sleep

1) In the Windows start menu search box type "regedit" (without the quotes) right click the entry and select "Run as Administrator", enter your user credentials for the UAC prompt and click "Yes" to open the Registry Editor. In regedit navigate to HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Policies\Microsoft in the left pane right click "Microsoft" and select "New, Key" and name it "Power" and hit enter.

3) Again in the left pane right click "PowerSettings" and select "New, Key" and type "abfc2519-3608-4c2a-94ea-171b0ed546ab" (without the quotes) and hit enter, then in the right pane right click and select "New, DWord (32 bit)-value" and name that "ACSettingIndex" and hit enter.

4) Now right click "ACSettingIndex" and select "Modify" and set the value at " 0 "; that's all there is to it; now close up the registry tree and at "File" click "Exit" to close the Registry Editor then re-start the PC to activate the change.

5) This does not remove the sleep entry in the shutdown menu but grays it out and makes it not accessible to users.

Option Two

Restore Sleep

In the Registry Editor back at "ACSettingIndex" right click and select "Modify" and set the Value to " 1 " exit the Registry Editor and re-start the PC to activate that change.

Hello Bianca, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It would be best to create a new thread in the forum area about your sleep issue since it's not related to this tutorial. This tutorial only disables the sleep option in the Start Menu and not sleep itself.

Well, at least this thread got bumped to my attention and it's something I've needed! I have a PC that doesn't Sleep properly, only Hibernates! So after implementing this tweak I no longer have to worry about accidentally clicking the Sleep selection....thanks BFK!

Hi

I've tried the tweak with Local and Current keys, and did successfully see that sleep had been greyed out. As it is after an hour or so with the PC still on it had un-grayed itself, and now refuses to go back to being greyed out.

I've checked and double checked that the keys are correctly named etc and have deleted them, and re-created them but no luck. I even tried creating the Qword 64 bit ACSettingIndex but this didn't work.

The laptop is a month old and it's Windows 7 Home Edition.

Any idea why this won't work for me?

Thanks in advance.
