Windows 7 (7000) public beta

My Windows 7 beta popped up a message yesterday that there is only 2 days left to activate – or it goes into cringe mode – meaning IT'S STUFFED.

However it will not activate online and none of the phone numbers to MS work for activation.

Re-arming it – which is supposed to be allowed 3 times at 30 days each time – only gave me another 3 days!!!

So, it's just as bad as Vista. Vista wouldn't connect to the net at all, 7 will not activate – both stuffed!

Microsoft can't even get their products to activate when the key is put in???

Is this happening to you?
-----------------------

The above instructions "appear" to have worked? for me. It now says I have 3 days to auto activate and if you click on that it says 30 days to activate. Still won't activate on demand and I doubt that it will do it by itself otherwise why wasn't it done this time.

You shouldn't have to stuff around with all this - the beta is timed out - it should just work until that time...

*What a waste of time - and now the worry that my added data will be 'locked up' in A STUFFED WINDOWS 7.

Hello Graham,

If it only gives you another 3 days instead of 30, then is because you had checked the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online box instead of leaving it unchecked during installation. You should be able to do a repair install to reset everything and still have your data. Just be sure to leave the box unchecked this round. Afterwards, you should be able to use this trial period extension tutorial when you are running low on time left.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The expiry date is hardcoded into the beta code so it will go into reduced mode July 1st and totally stop on august 1st. this is normal for a Beta release

Might I ask. are you still using v.7000?
I do not remember but 7000 either expired 1 July or 1 Aug 2009.
What KEY did you use to TRY and ACTIVATE your version?
have you checked to see the license. cmd (run as admin) slmgr.vbs -dlv
it also gives you the expire date. What is your expire date?

For just that reason you stated, ...its beta, I would think thats the reason MS requires activation, to test it. As with anything, test, test, and test again before RTM to make sure all is working OK. Thats the purpose of beta, to detect possible problems before release. Even if MS didn't change anything with activation from Previous to 7, they still will want to test it, cause some other code change could have interfered with the activation process.

Hope you got it sorted out graham. It sounds like you got the 30 days.

---------------

Something to consider, it may or may not relate to your situation:

Versions that will deactivate on July 1, may not activate now because you have enough time on the trial period before it automatically deactivates anyway. If it see's that you have enough trial period time to work up to the beta deactivation time, then it may not activate for that reason. Who knows, its possible regardless of your trial period time, 30 days from beta expiration or bi-hourly shutdowns, MS may stop all activations, ...dunno.

The Beta expires on August 1, 2009, and bi-hourly shutdowns will begin July 1, 2009. The RC will expire June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010. In both cases, you'll need to rebuild your test PC to replace the OS and reinstall all your programs and data.

Hi Shawn,

Is there a way to get Task Scheduler to run this every 30 days?

I've had a tinker with it but it coughs up an error, maybe because I have to set cmd.exe to run then slmgr.exe the the -rearm option.

hello Orbital
all you have to put is "slmgr.vbs -rearm" as this is what invokes the rearming process...
also its vbs (visual basic script) not a exe file...

open your text editor and copy and paste the code
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?>
<Task version="1.3" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/2004/02/mit/task">

save it as a xml and import it into the task scheduler
if you dont know how then follow on how to import a task from a another tutorial that i made here...
