SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

The "Clean All" command does take a long time to run. Sometime overnight on slower systems with a large drive. It would be best to let it sit until finished. :)

Well, I'm back posting this on this tutorial, that, I must say, is the best thing I ever read in my whole life regarding HDD management when you try to install or reinstall your OS.

Just for letting you know guys, seems that this procedure is PURE GOLD for Windows 7 (and possibly 8), works like charm, cleans your disk and even seems to "boost" somehow some readingwritting routines... at least for me. But, seems that this doesn't work for Windws Vista.

Why?, well, I follow the exact same procedure (without the aligment stuff, because is a HDD and a Virtual Machine), the partitions are created succesfully, BUT, the Vista installer seems to have issues with diskpart, or the version of diskpart shipped with Vista has issues so the installer doesn't react as supposed... I dont really know. The issue is that, System Reserved has a drive letter assigned no matter what you try.

Simptoms:
-Vista Instaler selects "System Reserved" partition as a default instalation path, and also warns for low space. You have to select the partition in which you want to install the OS.
-If you can access to your desktop after installing (either normal install or audit mode), a letter is assigned to System Reserved partition, making the partition visible and available to browse from "Computer" window.

Then, if you do this with Windows 7 installer, everything goes smooth, the correct partition is selected by default, and system reserved partition remains hidden (as it should be).

I've tested with the command "remove" from diskpart to ensure no drive letter is assigned during format, but no avail.

The Virtual machine had this features:
-160 GB HDD
-3 partitions: System Reserved (200 MB, Active, Bootable, Primary), OS (60 GB, Bootable, Primary), Data (99 GB, Extended/Logical Partition), all NTFS
-Used both Windows Vista SP2 ISO and Windows 7 SP1 ISO, both x86
-2 GB RAM and 2 cores for 1 processor.
-Used VMware Player 5.

I don't know if there is any fix for this, but just letting you know this issue just in case someone follows this tutorial for Windows Vista... Wow, even the installer does it wrong...

And thanks again for the tutorial, having a 200 MB System Reserved partition really does a difference when working with some stuff like Bitlocker.

Yep Fercog and there is plenty more where that came from and I have to say Brink is one brilliant fellow and so I don't upset the others in very good company. In fact this forum in my mind knocks spots off any others especially the local one I used to belong to.
