I was a bit surprized at first as well. Once I shutdown for the night and started up earlier today I wanted to get back to you on suddenly simply removing all 5 keys for a fresh attempt and ended up seeing results.

Some process apparently was tieing up WE in some way which would be one explaination for running into the initial problem of seeing the first GUID restored over and over again on the initial attempts. As it turned however it was only a minor annoyance that might come up for someone else again sometime but easily solved.

I just took ownership of those keys and then used the .reg to add the button and it worked on my 64 bit home premium.

I'm still trying to figure out why the error was seen but removed the delete button with the remove reg download for another attempt to it work the first time around this time. In case of any user error here as well as with anyone else later at least they will likely be seeing the one shown earlier.

I'm having a lot of trouble getting this to work correctly. I've taken ownership of all the correct keys, and given myself full control, but I still can't get it to work . I get an error stating that there is an error accessing the registry.

Do I need to change the owner to my USER account, or the ADMINISTRATOR account? Also, do I need to give the SYSTEM full control as well? I'm thoroughly baffled and dismayed, as I did everything outlined in the procedure .

    Hello Misfortune,

You will need to do this while logged in as an administrator. It will not work if in a standard account. Double check each GUID key to make sure that you have taken ownership of them and "Allowed" "Full Control" for the administrator account that you are logged on as.

    Hello Brink,

I am the only user of my computer, so I am the administrator. Do you mean that I need to activate the hidden administrator account? Under my user profile picture it says "Administrator," so shouldn't that be enough?

I just ran through each of the keys again, and the Administrator is allowed "Full Control" (as well as "Read" control). The administrator is also the current owner.

Umm, ok. What is the error message that you get in full?

No need to do this in the built-in Administrator account. A normal administrator account is fine.

    The error is
    Code:
Cannot import C:\Users\...\Add_Delete_Toolbar_Button_to_Windows_Explorer.reg: Error accessing the registry.
An update: I can create new sub-keys and create the entries manually, but for some strange reason the Delete button doesn't show up on the Explorer bar. I also cannot merge your REG file, because then I get the error above.

Are you able to manually open the registry (regedit.exe), or is only with this REG file?

Do you have UAC turned on?

If only this REG file, then this usually means that a GUID number was missed having been taken ownership and "Allow" "Full control" of.

Oh yes, I can open the registry editor and merge, add, and delete any other registry entries. It's only with this REG file that won't merge. I'm not running any security programs that would interfere, and I don't have UAC on.

I'm going to call it a night for now. I'll take another crack at this tomorrow, and maybe even a reboot will solve the problem. I appreciate your help, Brink :).
