Hi Swarfega,

That's a good one for placing a shortcut of Libraries on the desktop instead. :)

Thank you for sharing this.

Hello w00t, and welcome to Seven Forums. :)

After you have downloaded and merged the reg file in step 2, did you right click on a empty space on the desktop and click on Refresh?

Hope this helps,
Shawn

w00t,

Try merging this .reg file and restarting the computer afterwards to see if helps. It includes restoring the default registry settings at LOCAL_MACHINE as well instead of just at CURRENT_USER.

Umm, ok. Are you doing this while logged in an adminsitrator account? Did you use this tutorial to add the icon to the desktop or from somewhere else that may be using another method?

yea i'm administrator. And I haven't tried to add libraries elsewhere. Also could it be software from my previous windows vista that is causing this, as i used the upgrade option to install win7 build 7100 from vista.

I'm not sure why Windows 7 is not allowing you to delete the icon. Using this turtorial, I'm not having any problems adding or removing it.

You might see if doing a System Restore using a restore point dated before you added the icon. If it has been to long ago, then a Repair install may help instead.

w00t,

I had the exact same problem as you and figured out - after several hours of fooling around - how to get rid of the icon. I upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 and was unable to remove the "Libraries" desktop icon as well, even after following the tutorial provided here. I believe the answer lies in what type of start menu I had before upgrading. Instead of the contemporary start menu, I had the classic one. The tutorial and downloads provided here add a key to the new start menu - not the old - where I believe some of my settings still are.

To get rid of the icon, you must edit the registry:

  1. Click "Start" and in the search bar type "regedit".
  2. Browse to the following folder: "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu]"
  3. Once there, click "Edit" then "New" then "DWORD (32-bit) Value".
  4. A new value will be created and copy and paste this as it's name: "{031E4825-7B94-4DC3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}"
  5. Double click on the value you just created and in the value data box, enter in "1".
  6. Close out of the Registry Editor.
  7. Right click on the desktop and click "Refresh" and the icon should disappear.

Still no Joy

Hi, I have tried both the zip file registry editor and the manual registry editor mentioned above. Like the previous poster I had a classic start menu under Vista so I had high hopes. Unfortunately I am still stuck with the increasingly annoying icon I dont want. I hope MS fix this as I think having the desktop the way you want it is very important, if I dont want a libraries icon on it, why am I forced to have it!

Jilly (vista upgrade to Windows7)

Ok, I have just found the fix that worked for me on another forum, if you are still having no joy, try this one http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?p=3427237
