enable file sharing between the host and Virtual systems?

Things that i have managed to get right:
1: creating a virtual drive
2: Installing an operating system on the virtual box
3: Figuring out what the terminal is and how to use it... [just like windows CMD, a tad different]
4: Installing Guest Additions
5: Changing the resolution to a max of 1272x920
6: Creating folders in the /mnt directory using the terminal....

Yes then they are correctly installed... but on a side note the mouse integration worked right from the start.

woo hoo ok the last bit is easy... sudo mount -t vboxsf sharename mountpoint
sharename is what u called it in virtualbox (like i called my music shared folder mp3s) and mountpoint is the place you created in /mnt

if you restart your linux you will need to manually remount the shared folders or add a line for each shared folder in you /etc/fstab file to have them accessable on reboot.

To mount a shared folder during boot, add the following entry to /etc/fstab:
sharename mountpoint vboxsf defaults 0 0

I think i managed to get it to mount... not sure but i understand the commands that need to be inputted now to get the thing working. I just have 3 questions:

1. Where are the files and how do i access them?
2. How do i get root privileges so that i can edit the fstab file?
3. How do i know if it has worked?

1/ the easy way for you to access the folders is by using the places menu, then the computer submenu. In Ubuntu, this brings up Nautilus which is like explorer in windows, then browse to the location you mounted the shared folders.

2/ typing sudo before any command will temporarily raise your privileges to root.

3/ you will know 'it' worked if you can access your shared folders.

but the sharing is kinda useless... all my music just completely invaded my /mnt folder....

did you sudo mkdir /mnt/foldername then sudo mount -t vboxsf sharename mountpoint
for example if i sudo mkdir /mnt/music then if in virtualbox my name for the shared folder was mp3s i would just type sudo mount -t vboxsf mp3s /mnt/music it seems you mounted your shared folder to just /mnt from your description. i hope you are enjoying this linux tutorial!!
