Problems getting xpmode & Virtual PC working

    Hi guys,

New to this forum, so greetings to everyone.

I have a major problem with getting XP Mode and Virtual PC working on my machine:

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Recently upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to Ultimate via an Any time upgrade.

I followed the install process, which matches the tutorial link below. The software install process works fine (no errors), but xpmode and VPC setup do not.

    There are two problems:

    XP Mode:

Parts 7 - 11 of the above tutorial work as expected, however when I click "start setup" the Wizard disapears, and I see no other screen - I see none of the screens from part 12 onwards. I am just left with an xpmode vmcs file in the Virtual Machines folder. The state of the machine is "powered down". Most of the time double clicking does nothing, but sometimes it re-runs the wizard.

    Virtual PC:

Similar problems with Virtual PC. I can create a new virtual machine, but no virtual machine is run. The resulting vmcs file is displayed as "Powered Down" and double clicking does nothing.

A couple of times, I noted the virtual machine state changing to "Running", but no screen is displayed.

My mahcine definitely supports Virtual PC, as I had Virtual PC 2007 (uninstalled) running on Windows 7 Home Premium.

This is really annoying me, as I've shelled out the money for the Ultimate update, and there are no obvious errors when installing the software.

I've tried completely uninstalling xpmode & Virtual PC several times but with the same result.

    Any clues?

    Thanks for your help.

Did you turn on virtualization in your systems BIOS? On Dell computers (and likely most computers) it is off by default. You will need to turn it on before installation.

    Hi Petey7,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, it is switched on in the bios. VPC 2007 was running fine with Windows 7 64-bit home premium.

Also checked the event logs - nothing of note being logged.

    Thanks

Fixed the problem via this thread: XP Mode or Virtual PC doesn't start

    There was a process called CameraFixer.exe running, installed with my web cam. For some reason it stops VPC from running. Probably not 64-bit compatible, but still hard to work out why it should stop VPC from running;

I am not going to dwell on it, it is up and runnint. Very happy now

    Thanks

Glad to hear you figured it out. To be perfectly honest, I was out of ideas since you had already done everything I could think of.
