If it died before replacing the battery, than it sounds like you
have a deeper issue than a bettery issue (not preserving BIOS settings
across a power down/powerup). If it's an OEM system contact the
manufacturer. If it's a DIY system, start googling the MB and see if there
    are others with similar issues.

If it happened after a battery change, note that once you swap out the
battery, all BIOS settings are lost and you have to set them back up
again. OEM systems only have a few settings, but DIY motherboards will
have many more settings. Don't forget, the date also is lost.

Can you get into the BIOS at all?

Lastly, please fill out your system specs in your profile. That will
answer many questions others might have about your system.

Since it's a Xeon - can one assume you didn't build it, but bought it
frm a OEM (like Dell or HP)?

Since only the fans come on, are the fans plugged into the MB or off
the pwer supply? Do all fans come on including the CPU fan or
is it only case fans? Did you verify that the battery is the same
size (voltage) as the old one? Have you thoughht of swammping
the new battery with the old one to see if it boots?
