XP Mode, sharing files on guest machine

Right pane of the Start Menu has the Network link, if you have enabled it from Start Menu > Properties:



If you have not enabled it, do it by right clicking an empty spot in Taskbar and selecting Properties, then Customize button from Start Menu tab, and checking Network. Click OK twice to confirm:



Check also that you have Seven sharing options as here:

Might be so simple you just have to reboot to let all computers see each other.

About password protected sharing, I would turn it off and just put computers you don't want to join your workgroup to other workgroup. I mean, we are talking about a family here, or? If a hacker gets through your firewall, it's no difference if you have password protected sharing on or off. I would put other computers in Workgroup2 and allow for your computers in Workgroup1 access without passwords.

Thankyou for your post. Probably I am not wording it right and will try to explain.

I have a Billion BiPAC 7401VGP router, which everyone in my family has access to. There is no server as such, although sometime I wish there were so I could have greater influence on what happens on our home network.

Up until now we all have access to the internet through this same router, but we cannot see each other. We had never set up a network as such, because I do not want some of the computers to have access to my own or my work computer. And we had no real need to transfer a lot between our separate computers. I am particularly concerned about viruses that may be bought back and infect our network. I understood that without a network set up that each computer was a stand-alone, with no direct link to any other computer.

Now with XP Mode installed I think there is a need to have a network for my own computers i.e. Personal Win 7, XP Mode, work Mac, and mobile HTC desire phone. So I can have good access between them, while still not letting the other family computers have direct access to mu computers. That is, if possible I would like to leave them accessing the internet as stand-alone computers, without being able to infect or access my own computers.

I do not know if this is possible. Perhaps a network without giving those other computers the password the join my own network. HomeGroup is only for Win 7 computers and is still only a subset of the local network, where all computers can be seen together. I do not know if I am explaining myself clearly or sufficiently.

At the moment I am still trying to get my Win 7 computer to see my XP Mode.
From XP Mode I can see all the computers in the network that are running from /My Network Places /View workgroup computers. I may be looking in the wrong place in Win 7. Is there and equivalent place to view workgroup computers ?

Does this put it into perspective for you WS ?

This is simple; we all have had to do this at one time or another.

The simplest way to do this is to ONLY share a folder or drive that you want the other machines to have access too. Don't share out the whole machine or from the root of C:.

Say you create a folder called SharedData on the Root of your C: drive. You then share that folder. Now data that needs to be shared by your machines is stored in that folder. You can create the same folder on all your other machines too. Now you have access to it without having access to the entire machine. Next, if the share is username and password protected you have even more control over who gets access. No username or password no access.

With the above setup even if you have a highly critical sensitive file that needs to go from one computer to the other you can copy the file into the shared folder and then cut it out of the shared folder to the other computer so the file is only on the share for the copy and the cut. I would only do that if there was no other way to get the data to the other computer say a 100GB file or something. Otherwise if it is really that critical I would just copy it to a flash memory (thumb) drive and use sneaker net to take it to the other computer.
