    Virtual PC Networking issue

    Hi

I have just got my Windows 7 Home premium PC set up and running.

I also downloaded and install Virtual PC and have created a XP Prof virtual PC, activated it etc.

The issue I am having is that I can't seem to get my Host Windows 7 PC and the XP Prof PC to see each other.

I wanted to simply be able to share files and a printer. Reason for this is I have a HP Laser JET 1000 printer which drivers don't exist for on the Windows 7 O/S (64 bit) and was hoping to be able to access the printer through the Virtual PC and print from there.

Any pointer in this regard please would be a great help.

    Regards

Hi John, welcome to the Seven Forums.

First and most important thing is to install VPC integration features on any virtual machine you have set up. If you have not done that, do it now (tutorial).

Then you might want to read this thread: XP Mode, sharing files on guest machine

Please come back with any additional questions.

    Thanks KAri

I've managed to set up the Intergration Services fine now but there is still no joy. Both work groups are set to be "Workgroup" and I have also turned off/left the Wins 7 Homegroup.

There is an issue with my adaptors as they say that the cable is unplugged, I've include a screen shot of the Network Adaptors for the Wins7 machine (On the left) and the Xp Virtual Machine (On the right) in case it will help explain things.

TCP/IP settings for the adaptor on all of them are set to get settings automatically.

    Regards and thanks

    OK.

Your screenshot shows you are using a 3G connection (mobile broadband). Is that the way you connect to the internet, or do you have a traditional broadband line, too (cable or DSL)? If so, is your connected to a router by cable or wireless connection?

    Hi Kari

    No its a USB Modem.

The host PC connection to the internet is fine, I dont want to access the internet with the Virtual XP, I just want to be able to run my printer off it.

Something tells me with Virtual PC, you can access printers that are installed on the host side from the vpc side but not the reverse. I have several virtual disks and maybe it is because I have never done the reverse share of printers. I would say your somewhat out of luck sharing backwards.
mostimes, you can use a shared printer that is on another computer in your network but windows 7 normally demands the drivers be installed before programs under win7 can print to the printer.

I have successfully connected network and shared printers both ways, accessing a printer connected to host from guest, and accessing printer connected to guest from host. That is no problem.

The problem I see here is to get the guest to recognize your USB modem. I tried now some scenarios, without luck.

Is your computer connected to modem or router only with USB, or do you also connect with LAN cable?

    Hi KAri

No the modem is directly into the USB port. There is no other equipment, the ethernet ports are empty.

The specific modem is the E220 Huawei.

My question here is does it matter that the USB Modem is not detected?

All I want is the XP Pro Virtual PC to be able to see my host Windows 7 PC so that I can share files and printers. If The Virtual PC cannot even see/ping the HOST pc then nothing is going to work at all.

Can the host PC not connect to the Virtual PC with a "virtual cable" via the loopback IP or something?

I had this working a few years ago on my x64 Vista machine for the same reasons (I needed this same printer to work) but now something is slightly different with regard to network set up that the two systems cant see each other.

I think in your case the loopback adapter is the only change. Set it as network adapter 1 in virtual machine settings. Check this out: How to install a Loopback Adapter in Windows 7 | Windows Reference
