XP Mode freezes on "Loading your settings" screen

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with 8GB memory with an i7 processor on a new PC that I bought 2 months ago. I had some compatibility issues with some of the programs on my old XP machine, so I downloaded and installed the Virtual PC software to run XP mode. This was working quite happily until last night.

I had two users logged on, and one of these (me) was using Pinnacle Studo V14, having previously started XP mode using the XPMUser id. I had saved what I was doing, and left the PC for a while, so it went into hibernate mode. When I then reactivated the machine, and tried to use the XP session, I got a small window with some error message - didn't get chance to read it fully, but it was saying that Windows couldn't do something. Then it brought up the prompt for the password for XPMuser. I entered the correct code (I think), and it brought up the small "loading your settings" screen (that is normally there momentarily) on a background that was otherwise totally black, and this hung forever.

And now, that's all it does in XP mode! Everything under Windows 7 is still OK, but as soon as I start XP mode, it just hangs on the same "loading ...." screen on a black background. I can't get it to close, shutdown, or anything in XP mode - although it will let me select the Tools > Settings dialogue. However, the only way I can end this is to use Ctrl/Alt/Del in Windows 7, get the Task Manager, and end the XP mode task, and Windows 7 will then carry on OK. Even if I shut the whole PC down, power off and everything, as soon as I restart it, the same thing happens as soon as I try to start XP. I don't even get the normal XP start up logo and screens etc, it goes straight to the "loading ... " screen!

I'm guessing that it's trying to find some sort of credentials for XPMUser and failing to do so - anyone any ideas on what's missing and how to get it back?

Hi Dave, welcome to the Seven Forums.

It looks like if remote desktop connection used for XP Mode didn't survive host's hibernation and now it can not restore itself from hibernation. You could try to delete XP Mode's hibernation data, it forces XP Mode to reboot.

XP Mode hibernation data is saved in file C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines\Windows XP Mode.vsv (default location). This .vsv file only exists when XP Mode is running or hibernated, it is every time automatically deleted when XP Mode is shut down, and recreated when it is relaunched. Deleting this file causes XP Mode to boot from scratch next time. Notice that you will lose any unsaved work doing this.

    Thanks Kari, you're a star!

Deleting the .vsv file as you suggested has cured the problem, and XP mode is back to normal.

Have a great Christmas, and thanks once again.

    Kind regards,
    Dave
