Windows 7: Windows XP Mode refuses to setup

I am totaly lost! If I try to re-install Virtual XP I get a message saying it is alredy installed. Yet, I can't find it. If I try to uninstall Virtual Machine, I can't find out how to do that either. I created another drive in Virtual Machine but it has disappeared. I've been working on this a few days with no success

TO uninstall XP Mode you should go to add-Remove Programs applet from control panel, it should be listed there... after uninstalling, try reinstalling and see what happens

Installing Virtual XP

I removed and re-installed XP and still received the same error at the end. XP is being loaded into: C:\Users\RonG\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines\ . Is that a correct location? If not, what can I do to correct this? Do I need a special folder in Virtual Machines to load XP into?

I have been unable to find out how to remove the Virtual Machines software because I can't find it to remove.

Can someone give me this default location so I can solve the very frustrating problem?

Default locations of all Windows XP Mode files can be found at the beginning of this tutorial: Virtual XP Machine - Copy

Thanks for the tutorial information. It contains a wealth of information but, sadly, it didn't solve my problem of running XP the first time. That is where I get my errors. Is there someone out there who has successfully installed both Windows 7 Ultimate (64 Bit) and Windows XP. If so, can you tell me exactly how you did it?

Have you tried to completely uninstall Virtual PC? Remember, it can be found from Control Panel > Programs and Features > View Installed Updates, not from the list of installed programs. Click first View Installed Updates:

Name: Region.png
Views: 10
Size: 29.4 KB

Search Windows Virtual PC from updates list, select Uninstall:

Windows XP Mode refuses to setup-region2.png

Then uninstall XP Mode, it can be found from Installed Programs, reboot and try reinstalling both XP Mode and Virtual PC.

I have uninstalled both Windows 7 VM and Virtual XP. Now, the windows page tells me to 'download XP' and then download 'Virtual Windows 7'. It doesn't say anything about the order in which they must be installed. Which do I install first and which do I install second? Is that my problem?

Are you on the right page? The official Virtual PC download page tells very clear in what order you are supposed to proceed:

Windows XP Mode refuses to setup-capture.png

Step 1: Email instructions to yourself of print them
Step 2: Download and install Windows XP Mode
Step 3: Download and install Windows Virtual PC
Step 4: Update Windows XP Mode (not needed if you are running Windows 7 SP1)

I have followed those directions many times over a period of weeks. Both OS systems install with no problems. Still. when I try to start XP for the first time, I get the same error message: Xp failed to start completely, please try again. I get the same error no matter how many times I try to start XP. Perhaps I am installing XP to the wrong directory. XP does, however, show up under virtual systems in the start menu; as does Windows 7 virtual. Should XP be updated before I try to start it? If so how do I go about this?
