    USB problem with VMware Player

    Getting this error when I power up an XP VM;
    "Host USB device connections disabled."
    The connection to the VMware USB Arbitration Service was unsuccessful. Please check the status of this service in the Microsoft Managment Console.

    When I go into managment - services VMware USB Arbitration Service and try to start it I get "Windows could not start the VMware Arbitration Service on local computer."

    What am I missing here - used VMware before but never on 7 or not having ran into this. Appriciate any insight.

    What version of vmware player are you using? I think they fixed some USB issues with version 3.1.1.

    I would also suggest doing a repair install. I've had that fix problems in the past with vmware.

    There are a few google searches pointing to non MS usb root hub drivers, I checked they are all MS.

    Solved

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}.
    [export for backup]
    Deleted “UpperFilters” value.

    Rebooted. VMware now has usb access.
