"Cannot complete setup" - Windows XP Mode

Hello everyone

Homebuilt PC, all appears fine but when trying to install/setup Windows XP Mode, the green progess bar gets approximately 98% complete then goes red and a message "Cannot Complete Setup Please Try Again" appears.

I have tried four or five times now and same thing every time.

Any ideas ?

Have you cleaned up files, defragged and scanned your disk for errors?

The XPMode VHD is a big file, and does not work well if fragmented.

Best advice is to keep a separate partition for files above 500MB, including iso, virtual hard disk, movies, backup images etc.

Never leave very large files on system or boot partitions (pagefile.sys hiberfil.sys etc) - they are almost certain to become fragmented and difficult to defragment, slowing down your system and increasing defrag times immensely.

I always make a small swap partition of about 2x installed RAM for a system managed pagefile.sys virtual memory, and disable hibernation.

Did this and no luck. Green progress bar almost makes it all the way to the end then turns red and says Could Not complete

could the file be corrupt? Perhaps download it again?

Generally Windows setup provides a clue when it fails, directing the user to see the log file(s): setupact.log setupinfo.txt. Examining the entries in those files, especially near the end, should provide information about what setup choked on.

You can get to a DOS prompt (and other useful stuff) from the Repair link on the setup start page, but it's not intuitive. I'm sorry, but I don't recall the location of the log file subdirectories nor the specific moves to get a C:> prompt, but you should be able to figure it out.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but did you download Windows Virtual PC first, and if you did, did you download the 64-bit version?

Seavixen32's got it, in my opinion.

But another thing you can consider is to have a look in your BIOS. I think there is an option to enable/disable virtualization on mine, for example.
