    Disk2VHD Issue

Hi so i am currently in the process of using Disk2VHD in order to virtualize an xp environment. Once the image is captured i then go to load the vhd file within virtual pc (create new, use existing VHD, etc.). when i do this i get "Cannot attach the virtual harddisk to the virtual machine. check the value provided and try again."

I know if a vhd is above 127 GB you will receive this error. Looking at the VHD in windows explorer the file size shows as 118 GB. At this size i would think it would work but i still get the same error.

One thing i noticed, when i open up a cmd prompt and enter diskpart then attach the VHD it shows the VHD as being 298 GB(same size as the harddrive). I then resize the VHD within diskpart but the smallest it allows me to make the VHD is 149 GB.

Seems like virtual PC is seeing the VHD to be the size of the original harddrive. How can i get this to play nicely in VPC?! Any and all help is appreciated, thanks!

    Did you resolve your issue?

I have the exact same problem, except my vhd physical size is 25Gigs and when I attach that is Disk Management, I get 65 Gigs of allocated space and the rest in un-allocated (127-65) space. I have a Win7 Enterprise 64 bit OS.

    Thanks for any pointers.

    venkir,
Since you have an Enterpriseversion, you will need to talk to your system administrator.

VHDs created with Disk2vhd are exact copies of the system, so they will report the size of the vhd as that of the original system drive.

You need to shrink the system drive under 127 GB before using Disk2vhd to create an image.

    Still the same dam error

    Guys:

I installed Windows XP mode and then Virtual PC (which was part of a patch). When XP mode was being installed it created a virtual machine that can come up and I can see the XP VM running. All is good so far. When I try to create a new virtual machine using an existing VHD from our Engg team, it fails with 'Cannot attach vhd to the vm, check values and try again" Ahhhhhhh, Why the heck are these error messages so useless?

I have been at it for three days. I have tried various things"
    1. The physical size of the vhd is 25 Gigs
    2. When I attach it in Disk Mangement, it shows up as a new drive and I can see the files, so there is nothing wrong with the VHD file, plus others in our company have used it
    3. But the drive in Disk Management shows up at 127 Gigs with 70 Gigs of un-allocated space.
    4. I have tried shutting down all anti-virus software, no luck.

    HELP!!!

    Venkir.
