NT Workstation in VirtualBox under Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

    Hi All,

I was cleaning out some stuff in storage and ran across a Windows NT 4 Workstation CD (in original jacket). On a whim, I made an ISO of the CD and actually got it working under VirtualBox 4.0.6 running in Windows 7 x64 Ultimate w/SP1.

Windows NT 4 wouldn't recognize a 8GB virtual disk drive, so I made it 4GB with an assigned 1GB of ram and 32MB of video.

Total installation time was less than 15 minutes on a quad core w/8GB of ram.

The built in browser is Internet Explorer 2.0 :)

It does require a valid CD-KEY to install NT Workstation 4, just in case you were wondering.

If anyone needs help in this area, please let me know (I'm just tinkering here).

Linux CENTOS 7 / various Windows OS'es and servers

    Hi there

Great you got it working - its always fun to get an older OS to work properly as a VM --however IMO Windows NT was probably THE WORST OS ever to leave MS - including the rightfully much maligned Windows Me.

We used to call Windows NT "Windows NeanderThal" or "Windows No Thanks.

Slightly later OS's that MS came out with were the REALLY EXCELLENT W2K3 server --still loads of instances being run and even Windows 2000 Server --also very passable in it own way.

While these later OS'es might have been based on Windows NT the whole user experience and ease of installing and managing applications was STREETS ahead over Windows NT.

    Cheers

Strange, I always liked WinNT. Thought it miles ahead of '3.1, '95, and '98, but 2K was a lot easier for many folks (I still have 2K running also). Never tried Me. I still have NT running on a 200MHz machine, 160GB hard drive. Does not run very often, I only use it as secondary backup because the CPU is a little slow for most of today's software. Nice to know that it works in VB, if the hardware ever runs out, maybe I will install it there just for the curiosity value.

Internet Explorer 6 is installed, runs fine...now if I can find SP6, etc for NT 4.0 (since it does not appear it's available for download from Microsoft any longer) <sigh>
