Stabgotham, you should recount the story to your IT department extolling the virtues and necessities of having windows 7!

Hi there
although a great idea Virtual PC's performance is a REAL DOG compared to using other Virtual Software products such as VBOX or VMWARE.

However what the post shows is the value of being able to use a Virtual machine to run applications that you can't always get to work on the host machine.

Glad it solved your problem.

Cheers

Already in the works. I'm the chairperson for our Technology Committee and I have been pushing for us to adopt Windows 7 for a long time (since I started using it). Obviously, we wouldn't adopt until it's released and even then, our IT department will probably want to wait until SP1 for it.

Either way, it'll be a great story to share.

You mentioned it didn't install, which sounds like the app might work on windows 7, but just the installer didn't like the version number.

Ive installed some apps (winpcap comes to mind) that the installer refuses to install, but will in compatibility mode.
No, it wouldn't install because of the 64-bit OS.

A virtual machine does tend to slow things down a bit to start with with the exception of the XP mode no longer in beta but RC form.

Citrix took well over a year to get a working client for their MetaFrame client to work with Vista after it was released. They took the easy way out and had the original clients in 2000 and XP running with full access - as was required for the tight integration and security needed to maintain their connectivity and exclusivity. Of course, as we all know, Vista's UAC and other security fored a major re-write of a lot of appplication out there in the wild (or else, as was the case in more than one good application, abandonment of the app). I just (1.5 weeks ago) had to help a new admin at a local county high school system get MetaFrame working on her machine - b/c it was Vista and not XP, but the county schools' MetaFrame connection only links to the XP client download....

It is not surprising that there is not a client that works correctly on Windows 7 yet - but the good news is that the functionality of the client is not going to be much different that the one they developed for Vista, so it should not take a year this time around....

XP Mode is preinstalled and ready to go - with another package you'd have to install the OS from scratch, including all security updates and what not....

Love to hear success stories!

Shame to read some other forums, about the "death" of 32-bit OSs, though...
No more of a shame than when 16-bit OSs went out the window....

it's time has gone, let it go.

Not the Portable Virtual Box I hope! I had something running on that for all of 2 1/2 days and now have to start all over from scratch! Yet the Virtual PC seeing the XP mode along with the 32bit RC on another vhd and Vista even on another one just keeps going and going!
