VMWare vCenter Converter StandAlone 5.0 is slow

Just an FYI:

I've seen that a number of you folks have used the VMWare vCenter Converter 5.0 Standalone Converter product to convert your physical machine into a virtual machine.

I was using this product the other day in production at work and noticed that 5.0 was much slower than the 4.x versions of the product.

I found that VMWare enabled SSL encryption during the conversion and this slows down the process by 2-3x. A box I used to be able to convert in 4 hours and 50 minutes, took 11 hours and 50 minutes.

Anyway, you can easily change the behavior. Navigate to C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and edit the converter-worker.xml file.

Near the bottom, you will find this section:
Code:
<nfc>
<readTimeoutMs>120000</readTimeoutMs>
<useSsl>true</useSsl>
<!-- Delay is specified in milliseconds, -1 denotes the default.
<acceptTimeoutMs>-1</acceptTimeoutMs>
<requestTimeoutMs>-1</requestTimeoutMs>
<readTimeoutMs>-1</readTimeoutMs>
<writeTimeoutMs>-1</writeTimeoutMs>
<fssrvrReqTimeoutMs>-1</fssrvrReqTimeoutMs>
<fssrvrWriteTimeoutMs>-1</fssrvrWriteTimeoutMs>
 -->
</nfc>
Change <useSsl>true</useSsl>, to <useSsl>false</useSsl>

Then simply restart the VMware vCenter Converter StandAlone worker service.

Does this convert to a format that VirtualBox can use?

I don't know, I'm not a virtual box user. I highly doubt it though. I'm a long time vmware user.

Edit; This website seems to indicate it's possible, just not straight-forward.

I logged in with my VMWare account, yet I'm only given the option of downloading 4.0.1. Nice.

Yes, vmware can really get screwy on their website.

Here is a link for it;

Once you login, hit the + sign next to BINARIES and you should see the link for 5.0

Thanks....that brings me right back to the 5.0 product page (once I click download) and then to the 4.0.1 version. I'll try again in time.

I'm sure you are looking at the VERSION HISTORY by DEFAULT.

Click on + next to BINARIES

Now I got it. I logged out of my account, logged back in and saw the binaries section. Thanks!

^ I'm used to some of their screwy shenanigans, i've seen crazy stuff like this before.

Their website is one of the things that I don't like about VMWare. Most other things are very positive.
