    The name is unfortunate. As discussed, XP Mode is a combination of both Virtual PC as well as an activated and ready to use copy of Windows XP XP3 that owner of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate are permitted to use. It's only the preactivated licensed copy of XP that isn't available to Windows 7 Home Premium or below.

    There is absolutely nothing wrong with loading a virtualization platform of your choice (Virtual PC, VMWare Player/Workstation, Oracle Virtualbox). From there, you can install any operating system you are legally entitled to use.

    See this is why we need to call it something else besides XP Mode. Because it is also the feature of Virtual PC not just the image Microsoft provides.
    I simply cannot see any reason for confusion here, nor can I see why XP Mode should not be called so.

    Windows XP Mode = A free, licensed and pre-activated, pre-installed Windows XP Professional SP3 virtual machine / virtual hard disk for Microsoft Virtual PC virtualization platform running on Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions

    Windows XP Guest = A by user installed and licensed Windows XP virtual machine / virtual hard disk on any virtualization platform running on any OS, including but not only all Windows editions, different Linux distros and MacOSX
