Reinstalling Virtual XP - simply copy onto new hard disk?

My hard disk is dying but I am getting a replacement on Monday. I've backed up all the data I can, so it will be tedious but possible. The computer runs Win7 Ultimate, and I had a virtual XP machine to run some old programs. I have read here:
    Virtual XP Machine - Copy
that you can make a working copy of the VM file. It would be fantastic if I could just copy this over to the new hard disk - presumably it would mean I wouldn't have to reinstall all the programs?

Is this possible, and if so, how do I transfer it? Do I have to install the Virtual XP machine first onto the new hard disk? Or just copy over the files as is, without renaming?

    Advice gratefully received!

    Hi Kate.

Just follow the tutorial to copy your XP Mode virtual machine to an external HD, swap the HD on your PC, then install XP Mode and Virtual PC and copy your XP Mode to this new HD.

    Easy.
