Remote Desktop and VPN using XP Mode

    Running Win 7 64 bit.

Have XP Mode installed with a 'windows 7 non-compatible' VPN client.

While in XP Mode I can VPN into my office and Remote Desktop to all computers - all is good.

But, when I set up a shortcut to my VPN client in Start>All Programs>All Users I am having issues.

From Win 7 64 Start Menu, the VPN Client shortcut can successfully create a VPN connection to my office but the Remote Desktop can not connect.

The pop up window says 1) Remote Access to server in not enabled. 2) Remote Computer is turned off 3) Remote Computer is not available.

I have succesfully set this connection up using Windows 7 32 bit, but not 64 bit. Any ideas?

Are you using XP's Remote Desktop Client? I think the VPN connection is made from XP, it only seems like it's on Win 7. At least I can make RDP from XP with Cisco VPN.

I believe you are correct. It only 'seems' like I am connecting using the shortcut on Windows 7. I am actually connecting with XP - not 7 - so when I try and use 7's Remote Desktop it doesn't work.

I tried to make a shortcut to 7 from XP's Remote Desktop but it doesn't show up.

I could be mistaken, but I thought I was able to Remote in using this same method with 32 bit 7 - maybe not.

Thanks for the tip but XPMode's Remote Desktop doesn't seem to be virtual friendly.

I have solved the remote desktop problem for windows 7 xp compatability mode. Make a bat file with this line and place it the documents and setting \ all users \start menu\ program files.

    C:\windows\system32\mstsc.exe

This will open a remote desktop connection window and work with the vpn connection.

    Thanks for the help!

Creating the .bat file in XPMode works perfect.

Now I can connect via VPN and use the XP remote desktop connection from the Win 7 Start Menu.

    Thanks again.
