    Cannot install any type of Windows VPC

    Greets;

    First of all, let me admit that I am a 24k, gold-plated, complete idiot. I had Windows VCP up and running this past weekend, but was not happy with the audio quality. So I decided to try VMware instead. But instead of just deleting the vhd, I dumped ALL of Windows VCP and installed VMware Player. I wasn't really pleased with it's performance, and after deciding that audio quality was not a priority for my end goals, I decided to go back to the Windows app.

    Oops. I dl'd what I believed was the proper app, Windows6.1-KB958559-RefreshPkg-x86.msu (as reccomended by Microsoft). But when I tried to install, it gave me the dreaded "not applicable" message, even tho I am running Win 7 Home Prem, 32 bit, SP1 (which IS applicable, according to Microsoft), and nothing I did would change its mind. So I decided to give the other one, Windows6.1-KB958559-x86.msu, a try - even knowing it might not work. When I tried to install, it told me it was ALREADY installed and quit. Just about then I was near to having another mio-cardial infarction.

    I went thru my files with a fine-toothed comb, but could find no trace of
    KB958559-x86 anywhere on my system, even tho Windows says it is (see attachment). There is no trace of it anywhere, not even on my list of installed updates (ditto), but is listed on the Software Distribution ReportingEvent.log (see attached). As for KB958559-RefreshPkg-x86, it shows up in the Software Distribution file, but nowhere else, except as a dl (again, an attachment). I have googled this and have found no solutions that work. I have uninstalled VMware and used regedit on the app till I am blurry eyed. I have tried the System Update tool, FixIt and sfc /scannow, which only succeeded in restoring the two iso's: Integration Components & Precompact. Otherwise nada, nichts, nothing. The earliest System Restore point I have would take me back to an uninstall of VMware (it wasn't working right) and bring the app back, meaning another uninstall (which is where I am now). Everytime I go to dl the right software, Microsoft leads me to the KB958559-RefreshPkg-x86 page, which is no help at all.

    1st) Is it possible to install VPC using the KB958559-RefreshPkg-x86.cab? Or is that a lost cause?

    2nd) If not possible and anyone can help, please do. I'd love to have the VPC back. If I need to provide any more info, just holler. But I've already gone thru my CBS and CheckSure reports and they weren't much help.

    I'd REALLY LIKE to avoid another heart attack, they're no fun at all and tend to ruin your day.

    Hi RJsDad
    So you were running Windows Virtual PC on Home Premium (not the XP Mode) which could be why you were disallowed one of the updates at the site and now you cannot get the VPC to reinstall? You need Ultimate, Enterprise or Professional to download for that location. That is why you are getting nowhere, try VPC form here and you will be good to go.
    Download VPC 2007 SP1 from Official Microsoft Download Center
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir...uirements.aspx
    This is the correct link and yes it works on 7.

    Hey and thanks, but.....

    An unfortunate incident made me restore a complete system image from about a month ago and bada-boom, Windows6.1-KB958559-RefreshPkg-x86 downloaded and installed slicker than snot on a doorknob; am installing my own copy of WinXP Pro as I type. So this one is solved.

    XP Mode can only be run on Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions, that's true.

    However, Windows Virtual PC can be installed and run on every edition of Windows 7 except Starter (Windows Virtual PC: Requirements). There's no reason to use the old Virtual PC 2007 on Seven.

    When on Virtual PC Download Page, users not wanting or not being entitled to XP Mode should click the link Don’t need XP Mode and want VPC only? Download Windows Virtual PC without Windows XP Mode. It can be found in the middle of the page.

    Thanks for getting the correct link Kari. Went round and round with Firefox and it never would let me download anything. Used IE 10 just now and downloaded just fine.
