The tutorial Windows XP Mode - Install and Setup is to set up the free, pre-installed Windows XP Mode virtual machine, which as you have been told you cannot use as you have the Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows XP Mode requires Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise edition of Windows 7.

The tutorial I have been asking you to read and have referred to since the post number 3 in this thread is Windows Virtual PC - Create Virtual Machine

Two totally different tutorials. As long as you are not upgrading your Windows 7 to Professional or Ultimate, you should simple forget the XP Mode setup tutorial and follow the instructions on the one that I have been referring to.

well then as it stands...."virtual machines" is not listed in the start menu, as described in the tut.

and since virtual machines is not listed....then I cannot right click to open it in step 15. sorry about all this.

ok, I did that and only a black box opens with a flashing cursor.

This desktop.ini file is making me think something is not correct. Do you think I should try a system restore point prior to when that file was created? It needs to get back where it belongs and I just do not know enough about it.

in step 5, that "desktop ini. file is in there, with my vcmx file I created

earlier on in my rash of posts here....I made several references to this "desktop.ini" file that has been on my desktop since Aug 19th. I have no idea how it got there. It has nothing to do with what I've been doing currently. I was considering going back beyond that date to restore.
