VMware Virtual Machine Homegroup encountered error

    Hello,

I have searched high and low over the internet and was wondering if anyone here could help. I have a Windows 7 64 bit VM running on VMware Workstation for Labbing purposes. I am trying to connect the VM to my host computer's homegroup, which it detects, but when I enter the homegroup password, it just hangs. Then it returns to the screen whereby it says it found a Homegroup that is joinable etc, but right underneath it says Homegroup encountered an error. It does not get any more specific than that.

My initial thought is that Kaspersky is blocking the connection, so I disabled protection and firewall and tried again to no avail. I also checked if Windows firewall was on, which it was not. Any ideas what could be doing this? it just seems like something is blocking the connection.

Vmware by default uses the connection you already have established,
So this might be the reason for the issue. You cannot join a homegroup when the host os is already part of it, as its the same ip address.

Would it help if you could share a partition. I made this tutorial for VMware Player, but maybe it works in a similar way for VMware Workstation (which I have never tried). There are 2 methods described.
