When I logoff XP mode, It says logging off then I get a window that says:

You could just set it at the defaults when you close out it hibernates. It could be a program causing that behavior that runs in the background on the xp mode.

I'm not understanding what you are suggesting. When I log off XP signs off. And I get the error:
"Windows Virtual PC has stopped working"
BEX64
VMWindow.exe

When I close XP with the X in the upper right corner the virtual machine hibernates with no error.

I would like to resolve the error when I log off.

Thank you,

I suggested exactly that. Just close out and let it hibernate. Why do you need to log off? Do you have multiple user profiles for it? Microsoft designed xp mode to just run apps on the desktop. If you're using Microsoft virtual pc is was not really meant to boot into and use the windows interface. It was designed to be installed, install xp apps and then simply run them from the start menu in windows 7. Thats why there is no shut down button or anything like that. If you want xp mode to be in a more free environment, use vmware player.

And as I said, it most likely is an app that is running in the background that is causing it.

What programs do you have running on startup? (on xp)

I don't have anything running in XP yet. I would like to get it running correctly first.

Thanks,

This happens to me also. Hiding the problem with hybernation is not a solution. If an update to XP then Windows will automatically restart and that also causes this problem. The only app that is running in the background is Avast. I have shut off Avast and the problem still occurs. I have no other apps loaded yet.

I did some experimenting. This seems to be a bug in XPMode. If you use Logout or Restart you will see the bug (Logout from the Start Menu or Restart from the ctrl-alt-del menu). If you need to actually restart (as would be required by updates) then use ctrl-alt-del then select Shutdown, then Shut Down in the drop down, then run XPMode again.

Since it has been happening for a log time then I suspect Microsoft will not fix it.

Then use the superior vmware player. It is much better anyway. I do not have any problems when I used xp mode however, so I am not sure of the cause.

Anyone have any news on how this is supposed to work for gaming? Is it going to be based more on the Virtual PC tech they had which didn't support 3D acceleration or more on the Hyper-V stuff?
