Make a Windows XP Laptop to Virtual on PC with Windows 7 SP1 32Bit

    Hi,

I have a Laptop running Windows XP and a PC running Windows 7.

I tryed VMWARE Player and Windows Virtual PC. Both negative.

An Image of the Laptop as available as a .vhd File or as a HD (I changed the Hd to SSD).

    What tool do I need?

    Hi there

Can you be a bit more specific with what you tried to do to create an XP Virtual Machine -- did you use "XP MODE" on W7 or were you trying to create a "Full XP" VM using an XP install disk with VMWARE.

You can also "Clone" a running PC for VMware -- by a P2V (Physical to Virtual) conversion -- power up the XP system (Native) and run the conversion to create a Virtual Machine. Then the virtual machine image can be copied to your new system directly.

We need more info to solve the problem.

    Cheers

I made a backup from the Laptop HD, converted it to a .vhd file and tried to use this with Windows Virtual PC. VPC starts showing the page like after a incorrect shut down. after a few seconds, the window disapears.

VMWARE Player asks to install from
    Installer disc
    Installer disk image file
    or blank hard disc

What Software must I use to make a P2V?

    Thanks

I used Paragon Hard Disk Manager on the Laptop. Menu Wizards/Virtalizition/P2V Copy and created a .vhd File.

Downloaded VMware vCenter Converter Standalone from vmware.com.
Menu Convert machine. Select source type: Backup image or third-party virtual machine.

Browse for virtual machine or image. Select the image made from Paragon HDM. Next>

Destination System: Select destination type: VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine.
Select VMWare product: VMware Player 6.0.x

Select alocation for the virtual machine: your choice... Next>

Options: choose your settings for the new virtual machine.
Important: set on Advanced ... Install VMwareTools on destination virtual machine. Next>

    Summary: Check your choices

    Finish

It will take some time to create the new virtual machine.

Open VMmare Player, rigth-click on Home->Open a VM...

You would have several new starts. The virtual machine thinks, it is on a real PC.
Windows needs a new Serialnummer. Applications like Antivirus, BackupSW, etc. nag for a double use.

    Thats for a while
