uninstalling vhd in virtual pc - how to regain the 20g allocated

Hi to everbody I run a Toshiba Tecra R840 using windows 7 professional 64bit.

Recently, I created a virtual hard disk of 20 gigabytes in a failed attempt to install and run ubuntu in tandem with windows.

Having failed, I [naively] thought that I could retrieve my 20gig and return it to my main hard disk by simply uninstalling the vhd.

This has not happened and I do not know how to redress this situation.

I would be most grateful for any help/advice in solving this problem.

Many thanks in advance for your input.

Hi Rigsby, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Delete the following files if exist:
  1. The VHD, VMC and VMC.BACKUP files for your Ubuntu virtual machine in C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines. Notice that as AppData is a hidden system folder, you need to first enable showing hidden items in Control Panel > Folder Options, alternatively type %localappdata% in File Explorer address field and press Enter to access AppData\Local folder and browse to Microsoft\Windows Virtual PC\Virtual Machines folder
  2. The VMCX file for your Ubuntu vm in C:\Users\Your_Username\Virtual Machines

If that is a mounted VHD, right click and you will see. Or just reboot and it will disappear.

The title of the original post mentions Virtual PC. If this was a failed attempt to install Linux in Virtual PC, it has to be removed by manually deleting the files I mentioned in my previous post.
