Upgrading Windows in VMWARE

I am trying test an upgrade version of windows 7 on my vmware virtual machine but the only way I can install the upgrade version with my purchased code is if its an upgraded windows, is there any way to upgrade windows in vmware or is it clean install only?

You treat a VM as a normale machine except that if you have a CD or DVD or an ISO, before ( or during I think ) click on CD/DVD/IDE. In my example I am using an ISO but you could just as easily use a pysical cd or dvd drive
