Virtual PC onWin7 Home/Pro - Support for Dual Monitors RIGHT to LEFT?
Hey all,
So I work IT for a small engineering firm that has stuck with a reliable design software package since 2005. All the engineers have been upgraded to HP Prodesks with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and my HP Desktop (500-205t) is running Windows Home 64-bit. Since the Design program is incompatible with Windows 7 (tried unsuccessfully to natively install it), I've put Virtual PC on all the computers and installed XP Mode on the Pro stations to run the program virtually. All seems well, the program runs great with integration controls and so on (Picture A), except one of our engineers is bugging out from the way Virtual PC is handling his dual monitor setup.
Most people (myself included) Set up dual monitors in Windows so the Main window is on the left side, and the second screen is on the right side (Picture B - The numbers are swapped because of the way my monitors are plugged in). In this configuration, I can drag the integrated program from the left screen to the right screen just like any other window.
Because of the setup of his desk, the Engineer has his screens set up so the main screen is on the RIGHT monitor (Picture C). In this configuration, the integration window is locked to the right monitor and cannot be dragged to the left monitor at all. I also noticed during testing that changing this orientation while the virtual machine is on delivers the message "The Screen resolution has changed. Click on Refresh button to fix display issues. The refresh will disrupt any ongoing file copy between virtual machine and computer" (Picture D). I figure that means the virtual PC resolution dropped from about 3840p x 1080p (two monitors) to 1920p x 1080p (one monitor). I can't be sure though because according to the XP install itself, It has one 984px675p monitor in 16 bit color.
My hunch is that Windows XP probably never supported dual monitors from right to left, and can't match the engineer's settings, even virtually. Has anyone tried to run Windows XP in Virtual PC this way? Any Ideas on how I might get it to work (I'd prefer to stick in virtual XP to save on cost and additional setup time).
