MS in XP Mode

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate, with XP Mode in a Virtual Machine. And I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed in the XP Mode. It has been working fine until a couple of days ago. When I went to update MSE, it went through the Searching, Downloading, and started the Installing process, then gave me an error message that it couldn't connect to update (which was obviously not true, since it had connected and downloaded, but ran into a problem in installing the update. I had experience this a couple of times previously, several months ago, and was able to fix it by manually downloading the MSE update, then running it. So I tried that again this time, and when I tried to run the downloaded MSE update file (mpam-fe.exe) I got an error notice that said that the mpam-fe.exe file is not a valid win32 file.

Anyone have an idea as to whether this is a problem with the file, or with Windows XP Mode, or how to work around this?
