XP mode crashed

My XP mode in Windows 7 Pro has been working fine but now won't allow access to word processing program I use in XP and is making repeated noise. Error message says "requested op could not be completed because terminal currently busy processing a connect operation." I've tried shutting down both XP and desktop several times and did a restore point but problem persists.
(Incidentally, the restore point at first trashed half my desktop icons including access to IE but when I shut down again, my normal desktop reappeared.) But the XP problem was not solved by the restore point. When I click on XP it starts enabling integration features and XP screen appears but noise begins again and I cannot access the word processor. Seems caught in a loop. Would much appreciate any help.

Windows crashed. Now can't boot, even in repair mode or safe mode.
Let me open by saying I'm too old to understand most of the jargon and directions found in a technical forum like this. I've been trying to fix this myself for about two weeks, and have made so many changes, I've probably made a complete hash of it. The latest thing I did was to attempt a...

I left my laptop running for a while when i left the room. Then when I tried turning it back on I was able...

I've been using XP Mode for nearly a year without problems. Then last Thursday after finishing some work in XP Mode I tried to shut it down.
