    VMware server, Trend Micro

    Ok,
After talking to a mindless drone tech support agent with TM.
I decided to come here, to the topic I always check first.

I am currently running vmware server 2.0.2
The guest os is Server 2008 r2.
I prefer to run in bridged mode, for the simple fact of the guest having its own IP.
I can access the network via NAT.

I have added all the running vmware services into the allowed portion of my firewall.

My physical NIC's are bridged together, I have never had a problem with this before.

Does anyone have any insight on what I need to do?

    Hi there
Not sure what your problem is - or what you want to do.

Vmware server is usually fairly OK to get up and running.

    1) install (pretty obvious)
    2) Define Storage Pool --this is where your VM's will be -- can be over several directories including network drives

    3) create / install vm's

    5) you can start these manually or have them start as "services" from system boot -- a great advantage since the VM's can be started without anybody having to be logged on to the host machine - and they can be accessed remotely from the network / internet. If you use something like "NO-IP" or Dynamic DNS you can access the VM's without needing things like RDP.

    6) you access them via the "Vmware Console" - this is (unfortunately) a web based interface done via a browser.

    7) don't worry about the IP addresses of the Virtual machines whether NAT / Bridging -- the vmware virtual network adapters will take care of that.

If you want to use the REAL network adapters to assign specific IP addresses to your VM's it's a bit more tricky -- you'll need to do more research here - but I suggest you get the basic functionality working first.

The only disadvantage with vmware server is that it yet doesn't support 3D or some other improvements made in the "virtual Graphics adapter" that vmware player and workstation have done - so W7 virtual machines won't be able to use Aero.

For XP etc VM's this doesn't matter - for me using the VM's as "services" on the host is far more important.

    Cheers
    jimbo.

    Im pretty advanced with vmware...
I think something went wrong with the install...
When I disable the firewall I still cannot connect.
When I get home tonight I know what Ill be working on...

The one thing I noticed is that in the past the vm had its own process wit allocated memory,
In 2.0.2 I cannot find that .exe in the task menu or system monitor....

The ability to use aero doesnt bother me since its a production server sand box...
