There is another way (just an alternative) to fix that issue. Download EasyBCD 2.0 Beta and install it in win 7. then add a windows xp boot entry using it. After restarting, you will get a dual boot between win 7 and xp.

In first pic, click on the red bordered button : the 2nd pic will appear. click on the red bordered button, select win xp/nt/2k/2k3, and then in the third pic, click the red bordered button, thats all.

But my dear friend, whatever method of fixing the issue you may follow, restart/reboot is the must at the end to take the process effect. It is unavoidable.

Edit : you may try softpedia.com/EasyBCD insted of the beta if you want.

I did it before,
I could add windows XP ( to choose at startup) but when i clicked on it it said one file ( i think ) missing or something like that; but i didn't touch my xp files at all ( I really couldn't remove it even by right click > Delete )

This is not a difficult thing to do, especially if you are familiar with using the command prompt. You will create the menu entry for XP manually. Hopefully, the necessary files are still there, if not, if it doesn't work the first time, we can find the correct files and move them to where the need to be.

From Windows 7 open an elevated command prompt: "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", right click on command prompt and run as administrator.

Then type these four lines, one at a time, press enter in between.

Bcdedit /create {legacy} /d “WinXP”

Bcdedit /set {legacy} device boot

Bcdedit /set {legacy} path \ntldr

Bcdedit /displayorder {legacy} /addlast

At the reboot, you should have a menu entry for your XP. If not, we need to look at your system in more detail:

This is not difficult to fix. You have given good information above. There are three XP files that must be in the "Boot" partition so you can dual boot, as shown in the link provided above:

"Three files must be copied: boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM, and ntldr. Folder options must be set to "Show Hidden Files". I had to use "Properties" to give my user permission to access the files. Then it was a simple copy and paste. These steps are detailed here: Solve Dual Boot Problem with Windows 7."

Before proceeding, we must have a screen shot of your drive map. The links quoted above will show you how to do that. It should look something like this:

The XP partition is the only "Primary" and "Active" partition and must have all of the boot code. From Windows 7, look at the files in the XP Partition (I am assuming you can do that) and see if these files are there:



The next thing to check is to open: boot.ini as seen in the snap shot above and verify it is correctly pointing to XP in the C partition:

I think this is what you want.

But for boot.ini;
well, I couldn't open boot.ini through Run ( it says: Windows cannot find 'boot.ini'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.) And i know that i typed in correctly, so i did this:
Right click on my computer> properties > System protection > Advanced tab > Start up and recovery --> settings; I remember that there was an Edit button under section Default operating system, but now, there isn't so, I couldn't access to boot.ini

If you look carefully in the C folder, there is no boot.ini file!!

You can search for it.

You can create a new text file, copy this into the file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Save the file as: boot.ini

and try to boot to XP again ...

Trust me, the Windows 7 bootmgr is looking for this file and cannot boot to XP without it. This is what you will see when you reboot:
