virtual pc 2007 64 bit problem

    hi!

i use build 7100x64 and installed virtual pc 2007 for x64 with sp1.
i mounted the 7100x64 iso and booted. But I get this error:

    File: \windows\system32\winload.exe
    Status: 0xc000035a
Info: Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not
    compatible with 64-bit mode.

Is there a solution for this problem?

    thanks

    Hello Nechan,

Sorry, but you can only use a 32-bit OS as a virtual machine (guest) in Virtual PC when you have either the 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7 installed.

I'm afraid that I have not used vmware to know or not for sure, but looking at VMware Workstation release notes, it appears support for 64-bit guest OS's have been added. :)

Yes -- you can even run a 64 bit Guest on a 32 bit OS -- but even on a 64 bit CPU you won't be able to run a 64 Bit guest unless the "EHT INTEL virtualisation" is switched on either in the BIOS or by default".

To check whether VMWARE can run a 64 bit Guest on your system run the utility I've attached.

Even if it says you can't try checking your BIOS settings -- if the utility says OK for you ro run a 64 bit GUEST then the chances are it will work on Virtual PC as well.

Before buying VMWARE check the utility and BIOS first.

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo,

    Sorry, but:

Virtual PC 2007 SP1 Release Notes

This release of Virtual PC 2007 supports 64-bit host operating systems. However, there is no support for 64-bit guest operating systems.

Hi there I did mean VMWARE.

Here's a screen shot with Windows XP (Host 32 bit system) with W7 64 bit Guest OS (build 7000 beta -- gosh what a long time ago that was).

Note that if you are mad enough to do this your VM can't adress more RAM than the Host so your VM will be restricted to about 2.7GB RAM . Still plenty for a typical VM BTW.

So you CAN run a 64 bit Guest on a 32 bit OS like Windows XP with vmware so long as you know what you are doing. You must of course enable the EHT Intel virtualisatin like I posted in another thread.

enc screenshot XP Host with VM 64 bit W7 build 7000 beta as guest OS under vmware.

    Cheers
