    if you install updates it restarts then when it says welcome, a few seconds later it goes to "preparing to configure updates" then it says failure to configure windows reverting back

    You have to change permissions to have ability delete pending.xml
    Take Ownership of file - Vista Forums

    alternatively you can do this in console too

    In comments is also instruction how to make script which do that automatically :

    Paste to notepad

    @echo off
    cd C:\Windows\WinSxS
    echo Taking ownership of pending.xml
    takeown /f C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml
    echo;
    echo;
    echo Granting you permissions on pending.xml
    cacls C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml /G %Username%:F
    echo;
    echo;
    echo Attempting to copy pending.xml as pendingbackup.xml
    copy C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml C:\Windows\WinSxS\pendingbackup.xml
    echo;
    echo;
    echo Deleting pending.xml
    del C:\Windows\WinSxS\pending.xml
    Save as>>Save as ALL FILES>>FIX.BAT

    Next right click on FIX.BAT file and choose "Run as administrator" and next restart computer

    Your choose how to do that,through GUI or command prompt...

    I think it's here any serious problem

    1.Run cmd.exe as administrator (right click on cmd.exe and choose "run as administrator") and type:

    sfc /scannow

    2.Download & run Readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

    Next attache to post following files to diagnose:

    C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
    C:\Windows\Logs\CheckSur.log

    additonally create report from your system

    Start>>Search>>msinfo32>>File>>Export: save as any name

    and attache it to post too.If these files are too big to attache here
    upload them on RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting
