Sometimes updates cause problems on some systems. Considering how many systems there are worldwide, it is a minor problem - unless it happens to you. Then it is a BIG problem. The update you are addressing did not cause any trouble for me; but two other earlier updates did.
I have disabled automatic updates as Rich suggested and I install one update at a time. I run my system for a day or two and then I install the next update and so on. That way I am able to identify a specific up date if I have trouble. I hide an update that gives me trouble.
With Restore points enabled, Win 7 creates a restore point with each update. So it is easy to roll back if necessary.
