Promise Technologies ??

Today I was offered an update, on Windows Update, for Promise Technologies Inc. - Storage - Promise AHCI Compatible RAID Controller.
The 1st time I was ever offered this update. Since I have IRST controller with the latest drivers, I could not understand why I was being offered this update. A quick Google and I found someone who seemed to be in my position, but did the update and ended up with the BSOD. Needless to say, I won't be doing the update.

Anybody know how/why I ended up with this update offer?

Thanks

Looking on Google, it seems like a lot of people with ASUS mother boards are getting the update by mistake. This is why it's recommended to have Windows Updates set to notify you before downloading or installing them. Hide the update, and forget about it.

Thanks Petey7 - I do have an ASUS PT6 mobo and I will now follow my original thought, just as you suggested. Bye Bye Update.

A good example are video cards. If you have an Nvidia chip, but another manufacturer (e.g., MSI, EVGA), you can d/l the drivers from the manufacturer's site. But Windows update may offer the Nvidia update. Like Petey said, you can d/l, but verify what it is you are installing.

I also got this update and was perplexed.

Guess I'll just hide it.

This is what I did - makes me wise enough to listen to Petey who constantly proves his wisdom - lots of very wise people here.

Yep, got the same update offer. Don't have promise raid controller on my Asus mobo, glad I declined it.?????
So much for "allowing" automatic windows update. "NOT"

On a TechNet forum I saw someone post this issue with a non-ASUS mobo, caused all kinds of havoc.

Seems to be a big BEWARE issue.

I had this update offered and I have a Gigabyte board with no promise controller.

I just hid it.

I've noticed that everyone in this thread with the problem, and everyone that mentioned their specs when I was looking before, have NVIDIA graphics cards. Maybe that has something to do with it.
