Freeze after automatic installation of updates

My computer freezes after automatic installation of updates. This happened last night and has happened before and it requires a hard reboot. How to avoid this sort of trouble? What is causing this to happen?

If you have not disabled restore points, Windows creates a restore point before installing the updates. Restore you computer to a time before the updates. Then turn off automatic updates. Select "Check for updates but let me choose... Install one update, run your computer for a day and install the next update. When you get to the one that freezes you computer. Restore your computer again and hide that update.

We don't want to disable them. Some folks do it to save HD space; but restore points are a good safety feature. If you have not disabled system restore, restore your system using the restore point that Windows Update created before installing the latest updates.

To restore your system click on Start and type in system restore. Click on System Restore. You can select the recommended system restore point or choose to look at all restore points and select from the list.

See Applying update operation 217 0f 217 for a Windows 7 freeze after automatic updates installed on 15th Sep 2010. Might be of some help. (It's another thread on this very forum).

You definately want to leave System Restore active. This way if you have a problem you can have the system restored to a point before the problem. Win 7 creates its own restore points at least once a week. What I have started doing is creating an additional restore point myself once a week. This is just a "security blanket" that I like. Good luck

Absolutely agree with bigmck.

System Restore has been really, really useful on a number of occasions for me in the past.
