WU update 643 error w/C++ 2005 redistributable

I have Win 7 Pro, and started getting a Windows Update advisory that I need the security update for C++ runtime redistributable. I've never been able to get it to install, as Windows 7 WU gives error 643. I cleaned up .NET using the tool, but it doesn't seem to help. What's odd is that, after using Control Panel to remove the runtime (because it didn't seem to be needed, and I thought I could always reinstall it from the release package, if something complained about its absence), WU continues to insist that it needs to be updated. I guess WU's detecting a file that triggers the alert. I disabled the update. How can I get this fixed? Thanks.

Flavius, I love your Q avatar. I did what the M$ site you suggested said, and turned on WU logging. I still can't find out from the log file what error is happening, or why. I rolled back my system using System Restore to a point before I tried the updates, then tried installing the runtime executable itself (in case the absence of the 2005 runtime was causing the failure), and get error 1603. But, I understand that the 2008 C++ runtime is part of the O/S as of Vista, though. Is that right? I think something's out of synch here, and I'd like to uninstall all C++ runtimes, then reinstall the 2005, and the 2008 on top of that. All this has got me flustered, and I'm a techie. Any more suggestions? Spasibo.

1.Run cmd.exe with elevated previlliges and type

sfc /scannow

2.Run Readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

It will generate CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder,attache it to post.

sfc /scannow returned full integrity. I don't now if the readiness tool succeeded installing, though, because I see no entry for it (Windows6.1-KB947821-v7-x86.msu) in Control Panel | Programs and Features, although there's a small CheckSur.log file in the \%windir%\Logs\CBS folder, so I'm appending it below. I still can't install the 2005 C++ runtime: WU still asks for its security update, which still fails, so I disabled the update alarm again. Any more suggestions? Thanks.

That's OK.Readiness Tool is not normal update only special diagnostic tools.No errors reported here.

1.Try this one "MS Fix it" Windows Update error 80070643

2.You may also try reset fully WU ,run this "MS Fix it" CLICK in aggressive mode

3.Run this one fix for WU http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair...fix-wu-utility

4.Go to Start>>services.msc and make susre Cryptographic Services is started and set to AUTO

If it also fail find CBS.log in C:\Windows\logs\CBS,pack it and upload on RapidShare AG, Cham, Switzerland -it will be rather to big to attache here

Did all four of the above. The first MS Fix It ran. The aggressive one ran and cleared WU out. I then re-ran WU, and it again flagged C++ 2005 Redistributable as needing an update, even though it's not installed in CP | Programs and Features. The fix-wu-utility didn't even download. Cryptographic Services is set to start auto. I don't understand why WU is flagging C++ 2005 Redistributable for patching, when it's not installed. I tried installing it, but the install fails also. The CBS.log is over 10MB size. I'll upload the CBS.zip to the address you gave.

C++ 2005 redistrib. update error CBS.LOG.file

Flavius, I'm not sure the CBS.zip got onto Rapidshare properly, so since it's only ½Mb, I'll try to upload it here.

You have many this type of errors in your log.

1. Make sure you don't have on any partition (not only on C:) any hexadecimal folder -the hexadecimal folder:folder which name consist with hexadecimal digits.Such kind of folders you can meet only directly on any partition -never in any subfolder.If you have such kind of folders then remove them.
2.Uninstall all 3p security software
3.Try install updates on clean boot How to Troubleshoot a Problem by Performing a Clean Startup in Windows 7 or Vista

C++ 2005 redistrib. update error

Flavius, I've had no problems with anything other than this — not even with the monster WU update that just came. The runtime isn't even installed on my system (absent in Control Panel | Programs and Features), and when I try to install it from the .MSI I downloaded from M$, I get an error dialog. The behavior occurs with a "vanilla" setup where all Trend Micro AV services are turned off/disabled, its the engine is shut down, the network connectoid is disabled, and I've killed all non-essential processes, using Process Explorer. I did find a hex folder on E: that I deleted, but that's the XP SP3 drive.

What's REAL annoying is that, now that I've tried reinstalling the runtime, I get the shield with the exclamation point on the Shut Down button, whose tooltip help says to click it to shut down, to install the update. Then, when I do that, I get the blue screen that says Win 7 is being updated, and it shuts down, but when I restart, the behavior repeats.

Seems to me that the best approach would be to remove all references/objects in the Registry that may relate to the 2005 runtime, then remove all files in %windir%\System32 that pertain to it, and the pending install info. The Web has thousands of reports of similar problems with the VC runtimes, and complicated approaches to fixing it, none of which seem to work for many.

What's real bad for me is that each try/reboot I've done for this have each created a restore point, thus pushing a good configuration off the bottom of the restore point repository, so that I can't use System Restore to get back to one where the annoying behavior doesn't happen.

Thanks.
