Build 7600 - Windows not Genuine. Any proper answers?

I bought an Advent laptop form Currys (a mjor high street retailer) in March. Brand new, pre-loaded with Windows 7. All activated and working fine for 8 months until yesterday when, as I was just using it as normal, desktop goes black and it tells me my copy of Windows is not genuine and asks me re-enter activation code. Done that but it doesn't work. Tried restoring system to a point before it happened but that didn't work.

Tried starting 'slui.exe 4 ' to go to phone activation but it just takes me to online validation. I can't find this pone list/ dialouge box thing I've read about in all the answers to this problem.

Tried to find and delete KB971033 Windows update but can't find it.

I also cannot fidn the most absic answer - why is this happening? Whta is going on? My copy is genuine - bought from the largest national computer retailer in the UK. Why is it suddenly telling, after 8 months, that it is not genuine, when it is?

    Please, please, please help!

The key that you have used is totally illegal..I googled for ur key and this a non genuine key that MS blocked I think that this is a activation exploit.

I'm getting the same message on the same build. I haven't dug into it very far yet but how is it possible to buy a brand new laptop (like I did, ASUS UL50V) with Win 7 pre-installed (got the sticker and everything) and be a "victim of counterfeit software" as the little dialog box likes to point out? Is MS just trying to make some people pay twice? This whole thing is kinda pissing me off.

I chatted with a live person, checked my product key, everything checks out. Apparently Win7 is not activated on this laptop. No problem right, just activate it. Well, I get an error message from Asus now...aggravation is building...

That doesnt sound right. Was this message always there or its appeared now? I can take a look at your mgadiag log. Download the mgadiag tool and run it.

Click on the copy button at the bottom, copy to notepad, save as .txt file, then upload the file here.

Mr. Gilbert, you are posting exactly the same problem in two MS forums:

Build 7600 - Windows not Genuine, BUT IT IS

Please help - Windows 7 Build 7600 Not genuine BUT IT IS!

Its a blocked key as bagavan said. No one can activate it.

@Aonghus: Your system builder has bought and supplied the key. They can solve your problem better.

Asus or whatever the company, they are solely responsible for supplying a blocked key with wrong SLP.

BIOS Emulation of OEM looking product is the major "technique" followed now by the crackers; so MS is alert for it.

So again, contact Asus personally; they will solve the problem.

    The chain is :

Microsoft gave permission to X company to sell Y number of Installation > The companies sold it. Some how they got leaked (two numbers and the serial numbers) and distributed all over the internet pirated copy posting sites (through file sharing services). May be the Company reported to MS or MS themselves marked the combination as "wrong". So they banned it. The combination will never work again.

It happened to Lenovo, Lenovo reported against and the three numbers needed for activation and compilation was banned. Fact is that, the combination leaked before Lenovo actually sold any unit!

It is the company's responsibility to sell a blocked key; yes the end user can sue according to consumer protection act / equivalent in your State of Law; if they do not resolve the problem.

Microsoft has nothing to do with the later parts, they have sold the combination for X company to sell Y number of Installation ; and simply it has exceeded.

Obviously an OEM user will not enjoy the full direct support like a Retail copy, which is almost double in price.

    Hi there
You should be able to return the computer back to where you bought it from -- however why not turn this into your advantage.

Take a screenshot of Windows Not Genuine or activation failure and say you are quite happy to keep the computer but because your source of Windows is *suspect* give me a Copy of RETAIL W7 Pro.

You'll probably get away with this --failing that you could complain to BBC Watchdog or the OFT (Office of Fair Trading). The UK believe it or not does have quite good Consumer Protection Laws but you have to invoke them yourselves.

Also in the run up to XMAS I doubt if a major store wants publicity that it's selling dubious copies of Windows installed on its products.

    Cheers
