Looking it up on Wikipedia indicates that it can only be activated in China.

That version is for developing markets....if the IP number requesting activation did not come from China....activation will fail.....

Yeah, I have seen the same thing though on Office 2010 (H&S Edition) in India. I think this is "Ivan..." says, for some of the Asian (developing) markets.

    Hi there

The post IS correct -- but if you are outside China it WILL work if you activate it via a Proxy located in China.

I'm not sure if this edition will work in Hong Kong -- sometimes Chinese only stuff works fine in Hong Kong , other times it fails. A Proxy will always work however so long as its IP address is within the Chinese Mainland proper (excluding Hong Kong).

    Cheers

It depends - Activation Restricted copies of Win7 are supposed to be purchased and activated in an "emerging market" country (like China), and the copies are sold at a lower price than non-restricted versions due to this. Technically, purchasing an Activation Restricted copy of Windows and then using it outside of that geographic region would be a legal gray area, although we had a similar issue with a colleague of mine who purchased a machine in the US but a Win7 OS upgrade from Vista in Indonesia while he was there (was there for a few years, upgraded to Win7 no problem, then came back to the US later). After coming back to the US and having to reinstall Win7 on his laptop, activation over the phone with Microsoft was not a problem (he called the activation # for the US). YMMV, but it would seem that mitigating circumstances are at least considered by MS when activating.

    Hi there
In some ways this is just LEGAL B/S.

Suppose you are a genuine Chinese person who buys the Chinese edition of Windows and installs it on a Laptop and then travels to say England or Germany on a Business trip. Are you in violation of the rights by using your Laptop in England / Germany.

I thought the whole purpose of Laptops was for MOBILE computing.

If the above logic is correct then there must be ZILLIONS of people travelling every day who are using programs / Window versions designed for ONE country in another.

For example there are loads of encryption routines that are not supposed to be exported or used outside the US. Does accessing such a program or routine from a Laptop in Europe violate the condition even if the user is a US citizen.

The Law needs to get real on these types of issues.

    cheers

Hi - where can I buy this version? How much did you pay for it? What language packages does it have since I don't speak Chinese.
