    Windows 7 system recovery

    Hi,

Last year I got Sony Vaio with Windows 7 home premium OA (64bit) pre-installed. Recently i had a hard-drive problem and i had to replace it. Unfortunately i hadn't created system recovery disc and there was no windows DVD given in the box. Now I want to re-install windows 7 and active it with the product key tagged at the bottom of the laptop. Can I download windows 7 from microsoft website and use it with the original product key? Any help appreciated.

    Thanks,

No, you will need an OEM disc from Sony to use the product key on the PC. If you can't get one from Sony you will have to buy a Win 7 OS disc and if you have to buy one, get an OEM version as they are less expensive.

If you could find a friend with a retail version of win 7 home and install that then it would be legal. You might have to call MS and have them help you with authentication. Good luck to you.

I had the same problem sometime ago. I don't remember if my PC was a Dell or HP, but I called them and they sent me the CDs. I'm guessing that if you call Sony they will send you what you need.

    To order Sony disks:

    1.Go to http://servicesales.sel.sony.com.
2.Enter your computer's model number (for example, PCV-XXXX), and click List Parts and accessories.
3.Follow the online instructions to order the Recovery Media Kit.
If you are not able to access the Sony Direct Accessories and Parts Center Web site, contact a customer service representative at 1-800-488-7669.

If you want a cleaner reinstall than possible with the Sony Recovery Disks which contain all the bloatware and useless factory utilities - which have much better versions built into in Win7 - then here are steps to get a purrfect install: re-install windows 7
