Stuck on "Logging Off" screen

I just installed some updates from windows update and after I clicked the restart button, the PC has been at the "logging off" screen for about 2 hours. The HDD light is blinking like it's doing something.

As a background: This is a brand new HP laptop that came with Win7 home premium. I did an upgrade to Win7 ultimate (both x64 versions)

Not sure what is going on.

Given this odd behavior, I'm sonsidering just installing ultimate from the bare metal. However, I'm not sure if HP might have done some odd stuff with their OEM version. Sometimes you can't get all the drivers you need to do a bare metal install. Anyone have any experienct with this?

BTW, It's an HP Pavillion dv6 if that matters to anyone.

You should be able to do a recovery with the HP laptop. Press F11 at the boot up screen and restore it to the default settings.
