random reboots and windows update issues

i have windows 7 ultimate 32bit installed on one of my computers, hardware is as follows:

    - amd athlon64 4000+ cpu
    - asus a8n premium motherboard
    - 2 x bfg geforce 7800gtx overclocked (stock)
    - 3 x 1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM
    - enermax fma II 535W power supply (SLI certified)

the windows installation goes fine, but windows will randomly restart and windows can't download most updates (downloads hang) and any downloaded updates will fail to install- Internet access appears to be fine. i tried to install a program that will verify windows update is working properly but that failed to install.

i installed windows 7 using the same install disc on another computer and i haven't had any of these issues, so i'm guessing that there's an issue with the hardware.

is there some way i can scan the hardware in the computer to verify it is compatible and working properly with windows 7? does anyone know where i might start looking for a hardware issue with the gear that i'm using?

thanks for any help with this.

Well, before you use windows update, try to download drivers for your hardware off of the manufacturers' websites. Then don't download any optional windows updates, just the critical and important ones. Also, try not to install all of them at once. You have gone into computer > properties > Windows activation and manually clicked "activate" right?

there aren't any Windows 7 drivers for this motherboard on the asus website, however device manager shows all of the components properly- no unknown devices listed.

i've tried manually downloading one update at a time (critical/important) and they still fail when the installation is attempted.

I know windows shuts down randomly if it isn't activated, and you didn't mention if you have yet. And you need drivers for sure, especially the motherboard. Perhaps another website has a mirror of the download?

yes it has been activated, and the random restarts are without warning- i'll be in the middle of doing something and it just restarts without any form of notification..

i think i've seen a BSOD at one time or another when the restarts occur, but it disappears so quickly that i can't read it..

Ah well in that case you'll have far better luck posting in the crashes and Debugging section of this forum where something like this goes. Those guys really know their stuff. Follow the instructions: https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html and then start a new thread.

Good luck, I am certain they can find you the answer, though you may have to be patient as they have a lot of people to go through

Or it just might be your computer restarting due to getting too hot. You might want to check your temps in your computer to see if they're in the right degree. I've been told that 38c is normal for the CPU, but it will usually depend on the CPU.
