SP1 fails to install - code 80004005

I have tried all of the idea's presented here but I still cannot get the SP1 to update. Persistent error is: 0x80004005 unspecified.

This HP-G60 laptop was Vista and converted to W7 a little over a year ago, and YES, I had used the WinMail hack and used the Registry edits to remove this as stated above; also replaced the original mail dll. There hasn't been any issues with other updates until KB976932 (32 bit Intel).

To make matters somewhat worse, the W7 Restore DVD's seem to have been misplaced, but I do have the "Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Media" dvd.

The questions that I have are:
1) If I leave this w/o SP1, will I still be able to use most other updates, especially Security?

2) Can I use the "Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade Media" to restore the system and leave all other files intact? (have backed up all of the data stuff, but applications exist)

3) Since I have the SP1 file, can this be used to slipstream a reload for #2?

I am ready to try that registry edit, but I do not understand it. The hex numbers in keys are different and I want to make sure I get it right. What does the "6.1" mean, for example?

I am still trying to rid myself of the Windows Mail Hack and trying to get SP1 to install.

I cannot seem to do a "repair install." Every time I try, I get the message that I have to go on-line to upgrade, then when I enter my existing Windows code, it says that I cannot upgrade.

Help...says the guy who foolishly did not not save the original msoe.dll or the URL of the site that offered the hack to begin with.
