Windows 7: SP1 fails and after reverting Window will not start

I'm using Window 7 Pro 64bit with all MS updates applied. Using Update I tried to install SP1. It said that it was making a restore point (which later cannot be found) then failed just after I saw 100% installed. It then said that it was reverting to the original and un-installing SP1.

On it rebooting I got the message "BOOTMGR missing" and asked me to insert my Windows 7 disk. (legal and activated).

I then selected the "repair" option and it completed. However the message BOOTMGR missing still appears and Windows will not start except in Safe Mode.



I went into CMD mode and after selecting the disk # and partition # I fixed the MBR using:

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /rebuildbcd
bootrec /fixboot

This went okay but on rebooting again I see BOOTMGR missing. However when I use the Windows 7 disk I then saw "Windows" in the operating system list window so selected a further repair.

After all that I still can only start Windows (like now as I type) using Safe Mode with Networking.

I have checked that my bios is calling up the boot drive which is the only one I have left connected.

System restore reports that I do not have any restore points despite the SP1 installation saying that it was making one. (perhaps my restore points are on one of my disconnected drives?)

Has anyone any idea why I can use Safe Mode but not normal mode despite it running faultlessly for months?

Have you run the secure file check?
The failure may have halted during reconfiguring system files.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

this is very similar to what it has done to one of my installations except I can recover it using system restore.

Yes I have run sfc and it reports no problem

I've found the USB drive of F: on most systems

Thanks, I finally have access to my Win 7 home premium system on my Dell Studio 1555 in "regular" mode rather than only safe mode.

My problem is, if I reboot again Win tries to reapply SP1 and I end up going through the SP1 Fix process again.

I tried running the standalone installer under safe mode - also failed - also fails to revert.

I tried to get to the Windows SP Upgrade Readiness download via MS, but both attempts ended up with a zip file for which the password given to me, by MS, will not unlock.

I'm stuck in a loop.
