    Windows7 SP1 Installation Failures

    Hello:

I have two computers running the latest version of Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). This week I have been trying to get them to accept the Win7 SP1 update and they consistanty fail. I continue to receive the following error message:

    Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB976932)

    Installation date: ‎2/‎28/‎2011 11:29 PM

    Installation status: Failed

    Error details: Code 80073712

    Update type: Important

    More information:
    What's included in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

    Help and Support:
Support for Windows 7 technical problems and troubleshooting

I followed the info in the two Links above and insured that the "System Update Readiness Tool" (SURT) for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2, was properly installed.

I then ran the SFC / SCANNOW tool several times and found several files that could not be repaired by SFC.exe. I also noticed that at least one of those errors was listed on the CBS.Log Kb, and in theory it should have been repaired but it has not.

These errors are typically listed in the %systemroot%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file or in the CBS.persist.log file.

    • 0x80070002 ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND
    • 0x8007000D ERROR_INVALID_DATA
    • 0x800F081F CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING
    • 0x80073712 ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT
    • 0x800736CC ERROR_SXS_FILE_HASH_MISMATCH
    • 0x800705B9 ERROR_XML_PARSE_ERROR
    • 0x80070246 ERROR_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER
    • 0x8007370D ERROR_SXS_IDENTITY_PARSE_ERROR
    • 0x8007370B ERROR_SXS_INVALID_IDENTITY_ATTRIBUTE_NAME
    • 0x8007370A ERROR_SXS_INVALID_IDENTITY_ATTRIBUTE_VALUE
    • 0x80070057 ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER
    • 0x800B0100 TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE
    • 0x80092003 CRYPT_E_FILE_ERROR
    • 0x800B0101 CERT_E_EXPIRED
    • 0x8007371B ERROR_SXS_TRANSACTION_CLOSURE_INCOMPLETE
Is there a way to force the "SURT" run "manually" and if not what other tools should be tried?

Are there any other known causes for SP1 install failures?

    Windows7 SP1 Installation Failures Continue, March 9, 2011

    Hello:

I have tried to perform the installation of Windows7 SP1 numerous times and it always fails. I have included the failure error message below. I have performed all of the recommended options detailed withing the errormessage. All attempts have taken place ina "CLEAN_BOOT" environment or from withing "SAFE-MODE, with Networking". All system readiness applications & patches have been successfully installed and yet There are no firewalls or any other 'start-up files" running during these attempts and despite repeated the install continues to FAIL. posts on the Internet Microsoft has thus far chosen not to address this problem. I have found numerous posting by users with similar problems. HAS ANYONE FOUND A CURE FOR THIS???

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is a recommended collection of updates and improvements to Windows that are combined into a single installable update. The service pack can help make your computer safer and more reliable. A typical installation will take about 30 minutes to complete, and you will have to restart your computer about halfway through the process.

    Windows7 SP1 Installation Failures

    Hello;

I still have been unable to install the Windows 7 SP1 even though I have conscientiously followed all of the posted directions and I am fully compliant with all of the KB prerequisites posted in the Microsoft KB. I am not sure what they did to this SP but I have never had a problem like this with a SP.

Is there an an administrators version of this SP where it can be brute forced to completion???

    Hi,

You could try downloading the Standalone Installer and running it as Administrator (right-click).

That may force it into submission but there's no guarantee. Since you've had no luck so far it's well worth a try.

Also, if you have the bandwidth and an unlimited internet package I's recommend the Wave1 ISO.

It's nearly 2GB hence my first statement

    Hello!

Please copy your entire C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, right click on it > Sent to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

I may be needing most/all logs from that folder. Please upload it here.

    Thanks!

It would seem to be the most comprehensive download @ newrly 2GB and it's still early for me

Scrap that idea, you want windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

Wave1 is larger than wave0 because it includes additional languages, for an english language person (as the OP seems to be), wave0 is sufficient.

    Hi Richard

In your message above you had asked that upload my compressed CBS Folder "here", so here it is. BTW- I continue to get the following error whenever I try to run SP1,even running in SafeMode, ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(080073712).

I have tried running the SP1 Update in the Windows Update Mode as well as in the Standalone Installer Mode, neither works. My last attempt was in SafeMode using "7601.17514.101119-1850_Update_Sp_Wave1-GRMSP1.1_DVD.iso" that also failed.

I am running in Administrator mode. All Microsoft System "Updates" with the exception of the SP1 Update, have & continue to install sucessfully.

    Thanks!
    Doug
