So, since I bought what I thought was a real full genuine retail, whatever copy of Windows and wound up with an eval copy, I have to accept this take the loss and go to MS and pay the $300 to get another key because that is the only way I can be sure to get a NON-eval copy. And still, my original question. In my hand, I hold a copy of Windows, now I know that there is no way to know whether or not it is an evaluation copy other than to install it and wait for the 90 days to expire and wait for the watermark to show up near my system tray. Thanks.
What makes you think you have to pay $300 for a copy of Win7? You qualify for an Upgrade version even if Vista isn't on the machine during install. The best deal now for Upgrade version is $129 for Win7 Home Premium 3 pack family upgrade. That's three licenses which last for life for the version most need for less than $45 apiece, or 3 for about the price of 1.

Ebay can be a worry...I have bought XP from there many moons ago and it was ok...however there are dodgy ppl selling on there...I buy OEM editions now (but not from ebay) as I build my own PC's so it qualifies.
As long as you buy your copy from a legitimate company/PC shop or the like you should be sweet.
I like you also had no idea the key can be verified beforehand..I imagine if you google it there will be plenty on the process.
Also be aware that MSE can also decide your copy is non genuine...I simply sin binned MSE and have had no issues since.

"Windows is not genuine" error, computer extremely slow and freezes
Hello, I could really use some help. Yesterday, I booted up my computer just like any other day, and it took forever to boot up (got stuck at the welcome screen and then at the desktop before the icons and start menu showed up). Within 5 minutes, the computer froze and was completely...

How do I stop W7 "calling home" and displaying "not genuine" messages?
MS thinks that one of my PCs is running W7 that's not genuine. It is genuine - at least I bought it from Amazon and paid 141 for it so that - to me - means it's genuine. It may not be but neither Amazon nor MS will take any responsibility for it not being genuine so I've given up with them both. I...

Need to add "TASKBARS" (MSese for "Launchpads", "Docks" NOT "Toolbars"
My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar...

Cloned disk results in msg "This copy of windows is not genuine"
Hi, I have a two-week old, custom built desktop with a genuine OEM version of Windows 7, operating Office 2010. The 'system' sits on an internal SSD and all my documents and files sit on a separate internal disk. One aspect of my backup and recovery strategy is to create a clone of both disks...

"Windows 7 Build 7601 not genuine" intermittently popping up
I'm working on this for someone else - we have a genuine copy of Windows 7 Pro that is coming up with this error, but only about once a week does it pop up... then the computer is restarted, and all is ok. When I ran the validation (Genuine Microsoft Software) I get "Because Windows installed on...

"Activated" but still "Not Genuine"
friends this is frankly a Vista question but in Googling the problem it appears possible that both 7 and Vista suffer from the malady. I have a perfectly legit compaq sr2170nx minitower that came OEM'd with Vista Home Basic. My job was to restore it. Did so, and with the original-issue CPQ discs....
