    Upgrade, Product key and Activation problem


    I bought (about 6 months ago) an upgrade version of windows 7 to put onto a laptop running XP [MCE2005]. After installing (custom install obviously) I tried to use my XP product key to activate windows, but this failed.

    My question is why did it fail? Was a new product key meant to be supplied with the upgrade DVD?

    You cant activate win7 with the XP product key (elementary my dear Watson), you need a win7 product key. If you bought the student edition, you would have got the key via email.

Problem with Activation (Improper Product Key)

I did a clean install of 7 Home Premium, but when I go through activation, it gives me an error saying that I can't use the default product key (the original key that came with 7) for activation. Not sure how to remedy this...
