Upgrade, Product key and Activation problem

I bought (about 6 months ago) an upgrade version of windows 7 to put onto a laptop running XP [MCE2005]. After installing (custom install obviously) I tried to use my XP product key to activate windows, but this failed.

My question is why did it fail? Was a new product key meant to be supplied with the upgrade DVD?

    Cheers

You cant activate win7 with the XP product key (elementary my dear Watson), you need a win7 product key. If you bought the student edition, you would have got the key via email.

Wonderful, thanks for the quick reply.

Now I just need to convince software4students to send me another key, which may take some effort!
